解説†

予見者マルベスがアルセダインの王アルヴェドゥイの治世に残した予言の言葉。
いずれ死者の道を通り抜けるイシルドゥルの世継ぎが現れ、エレヒの丘で死者の軍勢を召集することを予言するもので、指輪戦争においてアラゴルン二世によって成就された。

長き影、地をおおいて、
暗黒の翼、西の方にとどく。
塔はゆれ動く。王たちの奥津城（おくつき）に
滅びの日、近づく。死者は目醒（さ）まさる。
そは、誓言（せいごん）破りし者らに時いたればなり。
エレヒの石に、ふたたびかれら立ちて、
丘に角笛（つのぶえ）の高鳴る音（ね）を聞かん。
角笛はだれのものぞ？ かれらを呼ぶはだれぞ？
淡き薄明の中に、忘れられし民を呼ぶは。
その民の誓言（せいごん）せし者の世継なり。
その者、北より来（きた）らん、危急に駆られて。
かれ、死者の道への戸をくぐらん。*1

Over the land there lies a long shadow,
westward reaching wings of darkness.
The Tower trembles; to the tombs of kings
doom approaches. The Dead awaken;
for the hour is come for the oathbreakers;
at the Stone of Erech they shall stand again
and hear there a horn in the hills ringing.
Whose shall the horn be? Who shall call them
from the grey twilight, the forgotten people?
The heir of him to whom the oath they swore.
From the North shall he come, need shall drive him:
he shall pass the Door to the Paths of the Dead.
