[[ロヴァニオン]]北方に居住していた、[[ドゥーネダイン]]の王権の統治下に入らず、[[サウロン]]の勢力にも与しなかった[[人間]]たちが[[エルフ]]によってこう呼ばれた。[[第一紀]]に[[ベレリアンド]]に至り、[[エダイン]]となった人々と共通の祖先を持つと思われる。
[[アンドゥイン]]の谷間の草原や森に住み着き、''[[ビヨルン一党>熊人族]]''に率いられた者たち（''[[森人]]''）や、[[緑森大森林]]と[[早瀬川]]の間の大平原に広がり、''[[北国人]]''と呼ばれた者たち、[[たての湖]]に[[湖の町>エスガロス]]を築いて住んでいた者たち、[[はなれ山]]に近い''[[谷間の国]]に住まった者たち''（''[[バルドの一党]]''）などがいる。
